Growth
For some three decades venison processors have paid a premium in the spring to farmers supplying stock at this time. Achieving target slaughter weights to obtain this premium requires fast growing deer. The simplest and easy way to do this is by using a Wapiti terminal sire.
To ensure Tikana bulls have the optimum genetics to achieve this we have used the Weight at 12 months trait, W12eBV as our selection tool.
Tikana male fawns grow on average 425gms/day for the first 12months of their life. (This is based on their actual birth date and an estimated birth weight of 17kg)

Even before we entered our data into DeerSelect we had been selecting for growth rate. We have data in DeerSelect back to 2005 which means the accuracy of the WT12eBV of our cows and bulls is very good.
The average eBV for WT12 of cows in the Tikana breeding herd has increased 19-fold (x19) in 12 years and currently is + 16.8kg
The average WT12eBV of the bulls on offer in 2023 sale was +17.7kg.
Efficient production is one of the fundamentals of GHG reduction. Utilising the potential afforded with genetics is a step in the right direction to reduce greenhouse gases.
